Interviews

For my interview on the Boca Grande Lighthouse, I was lucky enough to be able to walk up to the top and learn the history of the lighthouse while up there. I took many pictures, mostly for my personal use but some for the magazine.

The main questions asked were:
Q: When was it built?
A: 1881, and was removed in 1919 and returned in 1927.

Q: Where was the lighthouse stored when it was removed?
A: The lighthouse had been disassembled in 1918 and was moved to Miami in 1919. It sat in railroad cars and was completely unused until it was brought back and reassembled.

Q: When will the lighthouse be active again?
A: Due to recent renovations/ previous inactivity of the lighthouse, the light is not in placed yet, but the light will be put in in February of 2019.

The questions and answers give a simple history of the lighthouse and a brief description of Boca Grande.

Table of Contents Creation

Since half of our table of contents is to be filled with ads, I figured that I would leave the first row for my articles. The rest that I filled in are just titles that went with the title and were similar to the stories that I wrote. For my articles, i used 9 pictures (3 per slide) and if i were to write more articles I would most likely continue doing the same format. The font I used in the table of contents is, Calibri but in my articles I used Book Antiqua.

Cover Creation

For the background of the cover I will use a picture I took during Thanksgiving break by the lighthouse in Boca Grande. I think the title 'Travel Florida' is pretty generic but it describes the magazine pretty well. The pages I listed are basically quick summaries of the stories, and also have a simple title. I was messing around with fonts when I found a few that popped, so I went with Birch Std, Britannic Bold and a word art preset that looked nice.

Sarasota Resturaunts

Sarasota has a wide variety of  restaurants , and  you will most likely find  anything you are looking for. If you like going out to eat early for breakfast, there are many   casual places that open early.  Metro Dinner is a dinner that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner during weekdays. Opening at 7 a.m. and holding a 4.3 star review with over 340 reviews, Metro Dinner is definitely a solid restaurant. If you are a coffee drinker, Buddy Brew in downtown Sarasota is a great place to get a good cup of coffee very fast. The staff is extremely friendly and very efficient, and makes for a quick in and out. For a good lunch and dinner, Yummy House is the place to go to. Yummy House is a Chinese Bistro and holds a 4.2 star      review out of 700+ reviews. The food is    extremely good, which complements the very short wait time. The staff is friendly and very attentive to the customers, making the trip to Yummy House something that  should be considered by everyone.

Boca Grande Lighthouse research

Thomas Edison had a house in Ft Myers (30 miles South West), so the island had electricity very early on. The Boca Grande lighthouse was originally created in 1881 in (). It was disassembled in 1918, and was brought to Miami in 1919. It sat in railroad cars until 1927, when it was brought back and reassembled. Recent repairs have made the lighthouse a great sight, and the view from the top gives you a perfect view of the whole island. The new light will be put up in February of 2019.

Boca Grande Research

Boca Grande, FL is a very popular spot for vacation, retirement, etc. The island is an hour south of Sarasota, and has stunning sunsets and perfect blue water. Although it may only seem like a beautiful beach, the island has a lot of history behind it. The Loose Caboose is a restaurant in the middle of town, and really well known for their ice cream, and they hold a 4.2 star review The remains of a railroad track and the name of the restaurant indicate that the location was previously a railroad stop. The town area of Boca Grande is very nice, and there are many shops to buy clothes, groceries and all other goods. There are multiple golf courses and public beaches that are almost always empty, and the whole experience at Boca Grande is very relaxing, and something to look forward to. Overall Boca Grande is a great place to vacation to, and a very welcoming place to all of it visitors.

Sarasota Magazine Research

Sarasota magazine is very well organized, and makes it easy to locate anything wanted. Ranging from best restaurants to best water activities, Sarasota Magazine has it all listed. If you are looking for seafood, it has the top ten seafood spots for an affordable price. The organization makes the website easy for anyone, and you can find anything you might want to do.

Sarasota is a perfect place to travel if you like a warm, sunny climate. Sarasota is a popular place for people from up north to travel to, and is a very active town. There are a plethora of amazing restaurants, and many things to do at your stay. As a city on the water, there are many activities such as surfing, tubing, boat tours, relaxing at the beach, etc. If the water inst for you, there are gyms, courts and fields to exercise. Most resorts have spas, and many other ways to relax. The choices for food are amazing, and you can find almost anything you are looking for. The people in the town are very friendly, so service is also an A+. If you fall in love with the city, there are many new housing developments that are available. The only downside is since the town is growing so fast, new houses are getting expensive making it difficult for younger people to afford. Overall Sarasota is a very good place to travel to, and has many things to entertain you during your stay.

Project Selection-Film

Although i enjoy film, it can be very difficult. In a magazine, if you make mistakes you erase them and retype it, while in a film you might have to redo a whole scene. I know from experience and watching from The Inside Story of Ferris Bueller's Day Off that when problems occur in film it can be very stressful and difficult to fix. I don't know what about film editing i enjoy so much, but it has been a hobby of mine for many years. I usually would want to do the film, but i wouldn't want to have my face or voice in it, that's just a weird, uncomfortable situation for me. If i work alone, recording and editing something that I am in would be difficult, so i think making the magazine would be a better choice.

Project Selection-My Decision

I choose the magazine. I really like traveling, and destinations, etc. I think having a magazine about places I like would be cool, and I would be able to take pictures in North Carolina and Virginia the next time I visit. I feel like the magazine would be less stressful and I feel like I would do well on it. I would start out taking pictures of Sarasota, but when i get the chance to travel I will make sure i get some other pictures.

Project Selection-Magazine

The pros of making a magazine over a film would be the workload. I am planning to work alone on this project, and filming and editing a video by myself would be difficult. I enjoy writing, and also dislike being in front of a camera. I have been told id be a good reporter, i ask annoying questions and always take notes. I have passion for film and editing, but being in front of the camera myself makes me feel uncomfortable. Writing a magazine would be easier and probably more enjoyable for me. You can express an opinion or feeling just as well with words as you can by showing visuals, so making a message in a magazine won't be too difficult. What might be difficult for me is being able to make it entertaining to the average person. I am not sure what I want to make my magazine about, but finding something that I enjoy, along with the average person might be difficult for me.
